Poor
man's #97 anyone?
I had
foolishly bought a Stanley #130 off you-know-where (Bayside?), from a bad
picture.
It
had the nose sawn off and to add injury to insult, there was crack running
back into the body as well. Also, a Lakeside blade that didn't fit and
no paint on the lever cap. At least it was cheap. So, basically, there
was nothing to lose.
The odds that I will ever own a real #97 are probably the same that I will
one day win the lottery (I've never bought a ticket).
I
reshaped the broken cast iron, made a blade and then shaped a piece of
ordinary 1/2" steel plate into a lever cap.
I
made the tensioning knob too, out of brass, steel and purpleheart. It does
work well.
