Remembering Will

The William Nelson Palmore 2001 Scholarship Award
Presented in Loving Memory by The Palmore Family
Amanda Villalpando

Amanda was born October 10th, 1983 in Mt. Shasta,
California, which is about 8 miles north of Dunsmuir.
She grew up in Dunsmuir with her parents,
Teresa and Arturo, her sister, Elva, and her brothers,
Gilberto and Michael. Her father Arturo worked for the
Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroads and
Teresa, her mother, took care of their home and
family.

A fun loving and popular girl in school, Amanda was
also a good student, completing kindergarten through
senior high school in Dunsmuir, with honors.  She
loves music, sports and “being involved.”  In Mr.
Wright’s band class at Dunsmuir Elementary, she learned
to play the clarinet, which she played  all four years
in the Dunsmuir High School Band.

Amanda loves sports, enjoying basketball, volleyball,
and track.  “But my best sport is tennis,” she said.

“I really love to play.”  It shows, since she played
on the varsity team for three years and was ranked #1
in both her junior and senior years.

Amanda’s other high school activities include, Future
Business Leaders of America, Drama,  Rotary  Interact,
Student Council, and she was on the Honor Roll all
four years.   During her junior year she was a
teacher’s aide to Mr. Palmore. “Her enthusiasm,
willingness, and  quality work made her a great help.
I could always count on Amanda,”  he said.

Attending Sacramento City College at present, Amanda
plans to transfer to Sacramento State College and
study other languages.  She is bilingual and would
love to travel.   “Growing up in Dunsmuir has been
fun.  I  am happy to have  made such great friends
here.  I will miss them.”

Amanda expressed her gratitude to the Palmore family
and said that it meant a lot to her to receive
this award. We congratulate Amanda and
wish her continued
success.
