Black Bird Adventures

The Maiden Voyage of The Black Bird., April 17, 2005

Of course, the ideal way to launch a new/old boat is with cheesecake and champagne.  Most of the WSC members (and guests) showing up for the second race of the season agreed!

Mother, Bea Eichwald, and Jennifer

Ron, Alan Spivey, and Mike Kelly

Henry Jotz, our sailmaker, Ron, and Pamela

Henry, discussing sail "bite."  Mother, taking a bite of cheesecake.

Bear didn't get cheesecake, but he didn't care either. LP. on the dock, obediently awaiting instruction.
RH, getting everything adjusted. RH and LP, casting off.  Arrow points to starboard jib cleat with pesky upward angle.
Away from the dock.  Quiet waters belie previous whitecaps, and hammer to come. To all appearances, an idyllic maiden voyage.
Still in the marina, heading out to the real world!  The devil jib still at rest.

Innocent and unsuspecting bystanders (and Teddy) are unaware of impending disaster on the lake.

The Story of the Capsize

The next to the last leg of the tow.  After floating in 48 degree water for nearly 1/2 hour, we shiver in the rear of the barge. The last leg of the tow in to the marina.  Alan and friend beached the barge, and sailors from everywhere came out to right the Black Bird. Ron,
who had shivered and teeth-chattered on our way back, jumped out in bare feet and boxer shorts to direct the righting of the boat.  I unceremoniously
retreated to the van to shed wet clothing and shiver, while contemplating our next voyage, two weeks' hence.  Do stay tuned.
The lake hasn't had the best of THIS CREW!
