README.1ST
Welcome to the Internet!
This suite of programs contains everything you need to connect fully to
all the resources of the Internet. We hope you will enjoy using all the
resources it has to offer. Here is a brief description of each of the
programs included in this suite. For more complete descriptions, see the
documentation included with each one.
System requirements:
386 or better (486, Pentium) 100% IBM compatible personal computer
Windows version 3.1 (NOT Windows 95!)
100% Hayes compatible modem
7 MB available disk space for installation
It is highly recommended that you print out this document and refer to
it when you first try out these programs. It will make your initiation into
the world of cyberspace much easier.
The programs included in this suite are:
Peter Tattam's Trumpet WinSOCK (TCPman)
Eudora Lite - a mail reader.
WinVN - a news reader.
Term16 - Telnet client.
CuteFTP - Windows FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
Ping - A ping client
WSFinger - A finger client
Microsoft(R) Internet Explorer - A World Wide Web (WWW) client
MIRC - Internet Relay Chat Client.
You may also wish to download the latest version of Netscape, which is
another excellent World Wide Web browser with some additional features.
1. Trumpet WINSOCK (TCPman)
This is the program that connects your computer to the Internet. Once
you have connected using this program, you can use the others. This must be
run first, before any of the others are run. To connect to the Internet,
simply double click on the TCPman icon, open the 'Dialler' menu, and select
the item 'Login'. Your modem will dial, and you will eventually see the
message "Your IP address is: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where the x's represent
numbers. Once you see that message, you are connected, and can use the other
programs. Go ahead and minimize TCPman, and try out some of the others.
When you are done using the Internet tools, it is important that you hang
up the modem by opening TCPman again, and selecting 'Bye' from the 'Dialler'
menu. Otherwise, you will stay connected, even if you exit Windows!
2. Eudora Lite
Eudora Lite is perhaps the best freeware mail reader available. It
combines ease of use with considerable power. To receive mail,
just go to the 'File' menu and choose 'Check Mail'. Eudora will check
to see if you have any mail, and show you the headers of your letters.
Sending mail is equally simple. Simply click on 'New Message' in the
'Messages' menu, and you're all set to compose a letter. Make sure to give
your e-mail address to everyone you know who has Internet access.
Communication is what the Internet is all about.
3. WinVN
WinVN is an excellent Usenet news reader. It can be a little confusing
the first time you use it, however. When you first run WinVN, it will ask
you if you want to download the newsgroup list from the server. Go ahead
and say yes. After a few minutes, a list of newsgroups will appear in a
window. Click on the ones in which you are interested, and then click on
OK. The ones which you chose are on the top of the list. The others are
still on the list, but further down. Double-clicking is the key here.
Just find an interesting subject, and double-click on it. Then double-click
on the article you want to read. The more you use it, the better you will
get. Enjoy!
4. Telnet
The telnet client will allow you to remotely log onto another computer
through the Internet, providing that you have permission to do so. To start
a Telnet session, click on the 'Connect' button, and type in the name of
the site you want to connect to.
5. CuteFTP (File Transfer Protocol)
CuteFTP is the most powerful shareware FTP client available. It provides
you with a user-friendly interface, and will allow you to download software
from anywhere in the world directly to your PC. When connecting to FTP
servers, you usually connect using "Anonymous" FTP. This simply means that
instead of giving your user name and password, your user name is "Anonymous",
and your password is your e-mail address. This is the full address, and
should look something like 'joe@snowcrest.net'. To connect to an FTP
archive, simply choose a config name and click on OK. You can FTP to our
local server, which has a number of useful files. Simply choose
"SnowCrest FTP" from the list to connect.
6. Ping
Ping is useful to make sure you are actually connected to the Internet.
Simply choose BlockingPing or AsyncPing from the menu, fill in a host name,
and wait. If it is sucessful, you should have less than 100% packet loss.
Lower packet loss percentages are better.
7. WSFinger
Finger will allow you to see information about other users on the
Internet. Note that to ensure our customer's privacy, Finger is disabled
for SnowCrest users. However, you can still get information about people
at other sites.
8. Internet Explorer
The World Wide Web (WWW) is by far the most popular information resource
available on the Internet. It incorporates pictures, sounds, and animations
with hypertext documents to allow you to effectively find the information you
want easily and with a user-friendly point-and-click interface. Internet
Explorer is incredibly easy to use. When it starts up, you should see
SnowCrest's home page, which has SnowCrest's logo on the top, and links
to all kinds of interesting places further down in the document. Once
you have the home page up, you just click on underlined text, or on certain
pictures and sound icons, and the related topic will appear. The World Wide
Web has expanded so much recently that it now represents the single largest
aspect of the Internet in terms of sheer volume of information available.
9. MIRC
MIRC will allow you to connect to a number of Internet Relay Chat
servers. When you first connect, you will connect to a server, and
the program will retrieve the list of topics. Select a group with
a number higher than one next to it. Then you can talk to other people
just by typing. Since this is Chat, you can talk to several other people
simultaneously.

ADDENDUM
NetScape:
NetScape is very similar to Microsoft Internet Explorer, but it offers a
few other niceties, such as the ability to view pages not otherwise readable.
NetScape is a commercial program, but it can be downloaded for free off of
their FTP site for evaluation before purchasing it. This site is
"ftp.netscape.com", and can be accessed using CuteFTP. Alternatively, you
can find the ftp site on the NetScape home page, which can be accessed
directly from the SnowCrest home page using Microsoft Internet Explorer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Several of the programs included in this suite are shareware. It is
recommended that you register your shareware programs after a brief (usually
30 day) evaluation period, in order to enable the programmers to continue
to provide you with high-quality, low-cost software. Registration
information extracted from the documentation of the shareware packages
follows.

Trumpet Winsock
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trumpet Winsock Registration
Registration of the Trumpet Winsock is encouraged since it funds further
development of the winsock. It involves sending in a registration form
filled in with your registration name and other details. On receipt of
your registration, you will receive a password which will remove the
UNREGISTERED VERSION notice and replace it with your registration name.
As part of this registration, you will receive enough support to get you
going within the existing capabilities of the winsock at the present time,
and preference will be given to registered users when it comes to bug fixes
or future enhancements to the winsock. Packet drivers using Ethernet and
SLIP are presently the only supported network access. The winsock will
function through the use of packet driver shims for ODI, NDIS and token
ring, but the use of these is not supported, neither is the winsock
supported should you be using PKTMUX.
The Trumpet Winsock is currently distributed as shareware. You may use
the Trumpet Winsock for 30 days to evaluate its usefulness. If at the end
of that time you are satisfied with the Trumpet Winsock as a product, you
can register it. The basic registration fee for a single user version of
the Trumpet Winsock is US $20. See the documentation for details on
multi-user site licenses.
Checks or Postal Orders should be made out to Trumpet Software
International and sent to:
Trumpet Software International
GPO Box 1649,
HOBART, TAS AUSTRALIA 7001
You should fill out the order form in the documentation for Trumpet
Winsock and send it along with your check or Postal Order to the above
address.
FAX/Phone International 61-02-487049, Australia 002-487049
Please note that International mail can be rather slow, and it may take
