PLASTIC CHAPEL OVERVIEW
Plastic Chapel is a mixed-media architectural sculpture constructed largely of recycled plastic glued to thirty-seven individual panels. Each panel is fabricated from one-inch square steel tubing; the working surface is flat extruded steel mesh to which the plastic is adhered. When assembled, the panels form a four-sided sculpture 24' high, 20' wide and 20' deep. Although Plastic Chapel is first and foremost a work of art, it is also designed to be a functional and portable venue for musicians, poets and performance artists. In daylight, the Chapel is a brightly-clad mosaic of shapes, figures, and vivid colors. Lit from within at night, the Chapel reinvents itself and glows like a giant domed cube of stained glass. At the front of the sculpture is a stage measuring 10' wide by 15' deep. Performers onstage are illuminated from beneath by black-lights. Surrounding the stage is a black canvas backdrop with oscillating fiber-optic stars installed. The Plastic Chapel is a joint venture of Dunsmuir artist Finley Fryer, and SMP a local non-profit arts group. |
