Gold was the first natural resource to support communities of European settlers in the Shasta River watershed. Settlement began in the early 1850's, with the onset of the Gold Rush. As gold mining dwindled, settlers turned to farming and ranching on the rich agricultural lands. Today agriculture constitutes the major portion of the economy in the Shasta River Valley. Timber contributes substantially to the economy of Siskiyou County, and the Shasta Valley has mills for processing the wood.
From the KRIS bibliography The Siskiyou County 1995 Annual Crop and Livestock Report presents general statistics about the county, and details gross agricultural income. Siskiyou County Information: A collection of various data about Siskiyou County. |
