KRIS Shasta River Tour

Economy

Gold was the first natural resource to support communities of European settlers in the Shasta River watershed. Settlement began in the early 1850's, with the onset of the Gold Rush. As gold mining dwindled, settlers turned to farming and ranching on the rich agricultural lands. Today agriculture constitutes the major portion of the economy in the Shasta River Valley. Timber contributes substantially to the economy of Siskiyou County, and the Shasta Valley has mills for processing the wood.

There is a dramatic difference between irrigated and non-irrigated land. Agriculture, and the economy of the Shasta River region, rely on water from the river and underground aquifers.

Recreation has become another important industry for the area. Mount Shasta is a popular place for both down hill and cross country skiing during the winter, and for hiking and mountain climbing in the summer. The Klamath Mountains also draw many people who hike, backpack and ride horses into the rugged back country to enjoy the views, hunt and fish. Mountain lakes and streams are kept stocked with trout, and wildlife is abundant. The Klamath River, which is nearby, provides sport fishing for visitors and local residents.

Rocks, sand and gravel are quarried for building materials, concrete aggregate and road construction. Mineral resources include coal, copper, molybdenum and gold.

Guided fishing trips on the Klamath River provide good sport and spectacular scenery.
